Endoscopic (keyhole) Surgery - A New Alternative to Conventional (Open) Surgery

Q. What is Endoscopic Surgery ?

Ans. Endoscopic Surgery is an advanced surgical technique which consists of introducing a 1 cm diameter laparoscope through a 1 cm incision on abdomen. The surgeon then views inside the abdomen through this laparoscope after passing light through a fibreoptic cable. A camera is attached to the laparoscope and the image of the inside of abdomen is viewed on T. V. screen. Thus, the entire surgical team, O. T. staff can visualise the inside of abdomen. The surgeon thereafter decides the further steps.

Q. Are any special instruments used ?

Ans. Yes. Endoscopic surgery requires special long, 5 mm or 3 mm in diameter instruments for grasping & cutting the tissues. Also a camera and cautery (to occlude blood vessels) are utmost essential.

Q. For whom is endoscopic surgery beneficial ?

Ans. By and large, Endoscopic surgery benefits everybody. However it is most useful in cases of obese patients, diabetics, patients with previous surgeries on abdomen, unmarried patients.

Q. What are the benefits of endoscopic surgery?

Ans. Endoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) involves less trauma to body tissues. The main advantages are : (a) Less pain (b) Lesser duration of hospital stay (Approximately 1/2 that of open surgery). Rapid recovery to normal active life. (c) Almost no scars on abdomen.

Q. What are the disadvantages of endoscopic surgery ?

Ans. As with any surgical procedure endoscopic surgery has its own disadvantages. (a) usually requires general anaesthesia (b) more time required. (c) more cost (Approximately 1.5 to 2 times of the open surgery) (d) Occasional complications like embolism, cardiac arrythmias etc.

Q. What are the procedures that can be done by endoscopic surgery ?

Ans. The following procedures are routinely done by endoscopic surgery : (a) Tubal ligation (b) Infertility evaluation (c) Adhesiolysis (esp. post - operative, post - TB, endometriosis etc.) d) Ectopic pregnancy surgery e) Hysterectomy f ) Removal of ovarian cysts, tumours h) Myomectomy i) Septum resection In addition following surgical procedures can be done : a) Gall bladder removal b) Hernia repair c) Prostate removal d) Removal of urinary stones e) Appendix removal.
